Great potential exists for subsidence of closed low-level waste (LLW) disposal cells at manyrnLLW disposal sites across the United States. This post-closure subsidence can greatly increasernthe potential for radionuclides to be released to the environment through the infiltration of waterrninto the waste cell and/or the release of radioactive gases. Post-closure subsidence can be causedrnby a variety of factors, but two of the primary causes are package void space and packagerndegradation.1rnThe Department of Energy, Nevada Operations Office (DOE/NV) is currently evaluating thernconsequences and mitigation of post-closure subsidence for its Radioactive Waste ManagementrnSites (RWMSs) at the Nevada Test Site (NTS).
