For years the U.S. Department of Energy Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA)rnProject office and contractor offices have received inquires from around the world about thern"standard" UMTRA disposal cell design. There is no standard UMTRA disposal cell design.rnTwenty UMTRA cells were designed and 19 were built (the North Dakota cell was notrnconstructed). One site, Riverton, Wyoming, did not require an UMTRA cell because its tailingsrnwere taken to a nearby commercial site at Gas Hills. Each of the 20 UMTRA disposal cells wasrndesigned to respond to a unique set of political, economic, environmental, and technicalrnconditions. Future generations with the aid of hindsight may judge that mistakes were madernduring design of some of the UMTRA sites. It is hoped that with access to “why” things wererndesigned as they were, future reviewers may better understand decisions that were made in thernpast.
