Room temperature vulcanized (RTV)rnsilicone rubber (SIR) coatings are used increasinglyrnon outdoor HV porcelain and glass insulators andrnbushings when subjected to heavy pollution. Anrnimportant property of the RTV-SIR coating is itsrnability to restore the hydrophobicity of the surfacernafter a layer of contamination has built up on it, andrnthus continues to suppress the development of leakagerncurrent, dry band arcing and flashover. Asrnhydrophobicity is the key to the superiorrncontamination performance outdoor insulation, thernpresent study was undertaken to better understand thisrnphenomena. In this paper, the hydrophobic migrationsrnof RTV SIR coating with the pollution of kieselgurrnand kaolin were measured. The virgin kieselgur andrnkaolin and them with hydrophobicity were analysedrnusing Scanning Electron Microscope. Thernmechanisms responsible for the observed phenomenarnare suggested and discussed.
