To increase the transmission capacity ofrn10-kV-distribution mains it seems to be a realisticrnoption to upgrade the operating voltage to 20 kV, atrnleast for relatively new 10-kV-XLPE-cables whichrnhave enormous isolation reserves. But also the cablernjoints and terminations have to master the correspondingrnhigher stress. These must be assumed to be thernreally critical elements. For an upgrading some criteriarnhave to be taken into consideration. Additionally differentrndiagnostic tests must be performed. The paperrndescribes the test and measuring equipment which hasrnbeen applied for this purpose. Also the test proceduresrnmust be chosen very carefully to gain complex informationrnregarding the condition of the cable system tornbe upgraded. A test procedure being a combination ofrndiagnostic measurements and withstand voltage test isrnan optimum for this purpose.
