High speed can be achieved by high powered engines, but the successful operation of a high-speed craft is dependent onrnthe ability to design a lightweight craft with medium power levels and the optimisation of the hull for best performancernas well as optimisation of the operation and management of the craft. Exhaust emissions from ships, particularly CO_2rnemissions, are coming under very close scrutiny from IMO and other Organisations and efficiency indices are beingrnproposed indicating the comparative performance of certain ship types. The exhaust emissions performance of typicalrnhigh-speed RoPax and passenger ferries has been analysed and is presented in comparison with conventional ferries, asrnwell as against other forms of transport. The advantages of lightweight designs are also discussed.
