Oily Water Treatment Schemes For Steam Generation in SAGD Heavy Oil Developments

Production of extra heavy oil or bitumen by means of SAGDrn(Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) requires the generation andrninjection into the reservoir of a great quantity of steam. Arncorresponding quantity of hot water is then produced alongrnwith the mobilised oil. Bearing in mind existing and futurernenvironmental regulations, it is likely that partial or even totalrnrecycling of this produced water back into steam will becomernmandatory.rnThe complexity of the water treatment scheme requiredrndepends on the water characteristics, the steam boilerrnspecification (OTSG or conventional 100% steam boiler) andrnwhether or not waste water disposal is completely eliminatedrn(zero reject) or not. SAGD developments have some specificrnwater treatment issues which need to be addressed, forrnexample the high silica content of the produced water.rnThis paper will present different conceptual designs for arn300 000 bwpd water treatment plant. The different schemesrndiscussed include an OTSG boiler, a conventional boiler andrnthe zero disposal option. The various options available forrnprocess equipment will be presented, together with tworndifferent salinities of produced water and their impact onrnprocess design. Included will be an evaluation of capital costrnand operating costs elements.
