The objectivewas to clarify if it is possible the use 2D approach in solving the 3D support problem with reasonable accuracy. In this study the first proposed methodology is so called fore pole umbrella. The second methodology is based on the softening behavior of material with an excavation. Methods were tested by parameters of a real rock-building project and they were modelled with Phase2D software. The conclusions were: 1) the better is the classification of the rock the less matter is support system, 2) fore pole umbrella method can use only if the strength and the deformation modulus of the rock are very diminutive in relation to quantity of the support and 3) if fore poles are formulated in plane in 2-dimensional space the displacements are almost the same as the results of 3-dimensional model. The study was a success because it could offer new information about two-dimensional modelling.
