Use of Preloading in Rectification of Large Settlement Piles

Preloading is a well-established process for the treatment of soft soils under embankments, howeverrnits application to rectification of piles undergoing large settlement has been limited. Duringrnconstruction of a section of viaduct deck in the Middle East, many of the viaduct piers settled morernthan the design limits. Various categories of remedial works, according to the magnitude of settlementrnand type of structure at each pier location, were proposed, including preloading to 120% and 150% ofrnthe pile design load for 38 of the 77 affected monopiles. More recent monitoring results havernconfirmed that the post-remediation viaduct pier performance was in line with expectation. This paperrnpresents the process of implementing this innovative & large scale rectification of large settlementrnpiles using preloading.
