THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF ECOROOFS

This paper will analyze the performance of three ecoroof systems designed by Macdonald Environmental Planning. Each system's effectiveness will be measured by the analysis of case studies, using data from water metering studies, water usage for irrigation, and general observation of performance.rnDeductions made as a result of the analysis will be addressed for each system. The changes made to each subsequent ecoroof design and the reasoning for the changes will be covered as well. Characteristics of ecoroof components Macdonald Environmental Planning prefers, will be discussed in terms of their performance and combinations of components that appear to work.rnFinally, determining both life cycle cost savings and up-front costs are essential in convincing a client to install an ecoroof. Higher upfront costs can deter a client, but if the long term savings are calculated and shown to the client, there is a higher likelihood of having an ecoroof approved. Portlands' Bureau of Environmental Sciences' life cycle cost studies will be applied to our ecoroofs to show that public ecoroofs yield significant long term economic benefits.
