Turbine optimization for specific wind regimes and climate conditions is becoming morerncommon as the market expands into new territories (offshore, low wind regimes) and asrntechnology matures. Tailoring turbines for specific sites, by varying rotor diameter,rntower height and power electronics, may be viable techniques to make wind energy morerneconomic and less intermittent. By better understanding the wind resource trends andrnevaluating important wind turbine performance parameters such as specific power,rndevelopers and operators can optimize plant output and better anticipate operationalrnimpacts. This paper presents a methodology to evaluate site specific wind data forrnturbine tailoring. Wind trends characteristics for the Tehachapi wind resource area inrnCalifornia were utilized for this study. These data were used to evaluate the performancernof a range og wind turbines configurations. The goal is to establish a sense for thernvariations in wind power output at for the area and assess the changes in these levelsrnaccording to the time of day and season and determine how turbine configuration affectsrnthe output. Wind turbine output was compared against California statewide systemrnelectrical demand to evaluate the correlation of the wind resource site to local peakrndemand loads. Results are discussed using turbine power curves, generation, capacityrnfactors for diurnal and seasonal variations. A comparison of the commercial value ofrnelectricity and corresponding wind generation is also proposed using a time dependentrnvaluation methodology.
