The installed capacity of wind power has increasedrnsignificantly in the United States during the past few years. Withrnstate and federal energy policies, environmental concerns, andrnthe emerging green power market, this trend is expected torncontinue. This heightens the utility industry’s concerns about thernimpacts of wind energy on the stability of the electric powerrnsystem and operations as penetration into weak grids increases.rnIn some areas, wind power has reached a level where it affectsrngrid operations and the stability of local utilities. Utility systemrnoperators and engineers need to better understand the impacts ofrnlarge wind farms on grid stability before the farms are connectedrnto the grid. They need electrical models that will help themrnanalyze potential grid stability problems. Without thisrnknowledge, utilities are reluctant to integrate more wind powerrninto the grid.rnThe operating characteristics of a single wind turbine are wellrnknown, and models that simulate and predict dynamicrncharacteristics under various wind and grid conditions arernavailable. However, models that can simulate and predict thernbehavior of large wind power plants with hundreds of windrnturbines and their impact on the power system operations havernyet to be developed. In this paper, the model for a large windrnfarm will be presented. Characteristics of single turbines will bernretained; however, the aggregate impact of a wind farm will bernmore important to the power system network because a modernrnwind farm consists of many turbines spread over a very largernarea. Wind farm dynamic behavior and its contribution tornstability during faults will be examined.
