STRATEGY OF THE GERMAN GOVERNMENTON THE UTILIZATION OF OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY- CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

The German Federal Government has set itself a number of concrete targets forrnexpanding renewable energies with a view to effective climate protection andrnsustainable energy supply. Pivotal amongst this raft of energy policy measures is thernRenewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), which is currently being revised. The EEGrnhas effected a significant increase in the use of renewable energy resources forrnpower generation, and has also aided the development of selected branches ofrnindustry and helped to safeguard existing jobs, as well as creating new ones. As wellrnas expanding onshore sites and repowering existing installations, the furtherrnexpansion of wind power in Germany will also encompass the gradual developmentrnof offshore sites. In this context, the Federal Environment Ministry was entrusted withrnformulating and presenting the "Strategy of the German Government on thernUtilization of Off-shore Wind Energy". This states that the share of electricityrnconsumption generated by wind power is to increase to at least 25 % within the nextrnthirty years. A 15 % share of electricity consumption can be achieved from the use ofrnoffshore wind energy alone. Implementation of the Federal Government’s offshorernstrategy will focus primarily on the identification and selection of protected areas andrnsuitable areas for offshore wind farms, connection to the grid, the continuation of anrnextensive research program, and revision of the Renewable Energy Sources Act.
