Accurate assessment of the wind resource at the turbine hub height is critical. Availablernmethods of obtaining data at hub heights have disadvantages in initial cost and ease ofrnmaintenance. One potential solution is the use of “tall towers”, which, in addition to theirrnheight, are numerous and often have favorable siting. However, many investigators arernreluctant to use them because of concerns that aerodynamic effects caused by the towersrncorrupt the data, and that the method normally used to mitigate this skews the data high.rnIn this study, two tall towers were instrumented with redundant anemometers, and arnmethod based on wind direction was adopted to mitigate data corruption withoutrnskewing. Then, 50 meter tilt-up towers were installed near the tall towers to serve asrnreference instruments. The data have been statistically analyzed and compared. Thisrnpaper presents the results of this study.
