Creating a Planning Tool for Sustainable Urban Water Resources Management

Water does not recognise any administrative boundaries, neither regarding legal borderlinesrndrawn on a map, nor municipal responsibilities and divisions that apply to water. Still, in mostrncities, this administrative division concerning water is a fact. Several city departments are inrndifferent ways involved in and responsible for handling one or several aspects of the city’s waterrnresources. As a result the available information is scattered and responsibilities sometimesrnunclear.rnIn Malm?, a project to gather all relevant information regarding urban water resources started inrnNovember 2000. The aim is to provide all personnel within the city administration with arnplanning tool, a database where all available information regarding urban water can be found.rnThe project is financed by Malm? Water and Wastewater Works and the Swedish ResearchrnCouncil for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning. It is estimated to bernfinished by December 2003.rnThe project will demonstrate the use of a practical planning tool, which makes use of informationrnfrom several different departments in a city. The suggested technique will lead to a morernsustainable use of the available water resources in the urban environment. Giving the personnelrnwithin the different city departments access to all relevant information on urban water willrnincrease the knowledge and interest of this resource.
