DEVELOPING A WEB-BASED INTERACTIVE TUTORIAL FOR AN INFORMATION LITERACY PROGRAM

Designing a technological system for the delivery of library instruction has gained increasing attention among librarians and library administrators. The advantages of a web-based interactive tutorial are well documented. Using the St. John's University Library experience, the presenters will take the audience step-by-step through the design process and final implementation of an information literacy tutorial. Practical guidelines will be given for forming the right team, setting objectives, selecting technological platforms and educational objectives, mapping content treatment, and conducting alpha and beta tests. The process of designing and creating an online information literacy tutorial can be exciting and challenging. It can also be frustrating and difficult. In an effort to produce some recommendations that might be useful to other librarians embarking on such a project, we looked back at the process by which we created the St. John's University Libraries' Information Literacy Tutorial. While recognizing that our process in creating the tutorial was by no means perfect, we did manage to come to successful completion of the project within a reasonable time frame and had our share of triumphs along the way. We hope that both our successes and our missteps will serve as useful guides for others taking up the task of creating this type of tutorial.
