The development of satellite remote sensing during the past 2 decades generated a huge amount of image data. With the launch of the new breed of high spatial resolution satellite systems, the volume of digital image data significantly increases. Due to the availability of geo-spatial data in digital format and its sheer size, the data retrieval techniques become more demanded today, especially in a colossal-scale engineering project like the three gorges dam construction, in which a wide variety of hydrological, environmental, geological, and demographic data needs to be collected and assessed. A better retrieval technique not only saves time and money, but it serves researchers, planners, analysts, and engineers a more effective and efficient way to obtain images they need from an archive or database of a humongous size. Numerous retrieval techniques (e.g. wavelet transform) have been developed before from various approaches; however, none of them have tried the fractal methods
