Introduction of GPS Data into Computational Analysis of Flows in the Water Environment

We describe a method to incorporate measurement obtained through the global positioning system (GPS) into analysis of flows in the water environment. In previous studies, we conducted experiments to investigate unsteady flows generated in Kojima Lake using a float equipped with a GPS unit, which we call the GPS-float. Here, we analyzed the unsteady flows numerically applying a finite element method to equations governing their dynamics. Using the numerical result, we also solved the momentum equation of the GPS-float numerically to simulate the motion of the GPS-float. We present those numerical results, and compare them with the experimental results. We also introduce a method to obtain depth measurement to be incorporated into computational analysis. Such data are analyzed to update data associated with the nodes in a finite element mesh. Our techniques will be illustrated with examples
