Bottom ashes from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) can be viewed as a typical granularrnmaterial because they result from the incineration of various domestic wastes. They are mainly used in roadrnengineering in substitution of the traditional natural aggregates. As the characterization of their mechanicalrnbehavior is essential in order to use them, many studies have been led in the Civil Engineering department of thernEcole des Mines de Douai in the past few years. This presented article addressed the consolidated-drained triaxialrntest of MSWI. From the triaxial test results, it is possible to extract fundamental material parameters about thernsample, including its Young’s modulus E_(0,2) and E_(50), its Poisson’s ratio ν, its maximum deviator stress q_(max), its anglernof internal friction φ, and its dilatancy angle ψ. These parameters were identified for ten vertically loaded samples,rnat different rates, to show that the loading rate nearly does not influence the response of this class of material: it is arnnon-cohesive powdery soil, which can be consolidated quickly, what it is an important feature to be used as roadrngravel or as by-layer of shallow foundation. The test results also show the properties of bottom ashes arerncomparable to that of the road gravel (dense sand).
