Fly ash is one of the numerous substances that cause air, water and soil pollution, disrupt ecologicalrncycles and set off environmental hazards. The combustion of powdered coal in thermal power plants produces flyrnash. The high temperature of burning coal turns the clay minerals present in the coal powder into fused finernparticles mainly comprising aluminium silicate. Fly ash produced thus possesses both ceramic and pozzolanicrnproperties. It exhibits engineering behavior similar to fine grained soils. It is possible to use fly ash as an alternativernto geomaterials. However, fly ash possesses inherent variability in its characteristics, that can differ from source tornsource and fly ash emanating from same thermal plant may vary from time to time. The variability in the propertiesrnof fly ash are due to several reasons such as type of coal, degree of pulverization of coal, design of furnace, changesrnin coal supply, changes in boiler load, and coal firing. This paper deals with geotechnical characteristics of thernpond ashes collected from Badarpur, Dadri and Rajghat Power Plant located in the National Capital Region, Delhi.rnSince the proposed study is based on the characteristics of pond ashes mixed with bentonite, hence its propertiesrnhas also been investigated. The purpose of mixing this additive with pond ash is to check the strength,rndeformability, volume stability (shrinking and swelling), permeability, erodibility, durability etc. This paperrnpresents the details of the pond ashes, the experiments carried out to characterize them and the results andrndiscussions.
