The fabric of most historically significant structures and monuments is often delicate andrnsensitive to invasive methods of preservation. This often requires special consideration to geotechnicalrnpractices used for preservation through common methods. The technology associated with the use ofrnScrew-Piles and Helical Anchors for historic preservation of structures allows for an alternative approachrnthat can be minimally invasive while at the same time providing long-tern structural solutions in the casernof potentially unstable conditions. This technology can also be attractive for seismic retrofitting of historicrnstructures which is often of great importance and can be applied to buildings, bridges, retaining wallsrnand many other structures. Installation of Screw-Piles and Helical Anchors generally proceeds withoutrnloss of ground and often requires only minimal ground disturbance and almost no vibration. In the casernof underpinning, some excavation may be required but this can usually be performed without damage tornthe existing structure. The technology of Screw-Piles and Helical Anchors is described through the presentationrnof two cases in the UK that are used to illustrate where this approach was used to successfullyrnstabilize two historically important masonry structures. The advantages and limitations of the technologyrnare discussed as they pertain to preservation of historic structures and monuments.
