The role of the geotechnical engineer in archaeological work: The Greek experience

The present paper, taking for granted that the study and the protection of cultural heritage is an interdisciplinary task, deals with the role of the geotechnical engineer in this field. Through characteristic case studies, covering a wide spectrum of archaeological works in Greece, this paper aims to highlight the necessity of the participation of a geotechnical engineer in the aforementioned interdisciplinary team. These examples can well clarify the contribution of the geotechnical engineer as an indispensable/sine qua non link in the interdisciplinary team charged for the monuments study and protection, and assist to the enhancement of its role in heritage preservation.
