摘要

Regional cooperative efforts between the States, Port Authority, USEPA, and the USACE have allowed the Port of New York and New Jersey to not only maintain but also deepen the main shipping channels using innovative beneficial use technologies. Since the cessation of ocean disposal in 1997, over 6 million cubic meters of dredged material have been used beneficially for landfill cover, mine reclamation and brownfield remediation with substantial environmental and local economic benefit. This paper outlines the strategies used to overcome the significant logistical, regulatory and economic issues that stood in the way of achieving the transition to beneficial use.
