Digital photogrammetry is a low cost, non-contact technique that uses digital imagery to make high resolution, three-dimensional measurements of objects and surfaces. This paper reviews the principles of digital photogrammetry and explores the use of this tool for geotechnical engineering, with an emphasis on the measurement of physical models. The primary goals of this research were to investigate the effects of number of images and resolution on the accuracy of photograrnmetric measurements, and to develop guidelines for the use of photogrammetry in geotechnics. This investigation will show that the optimal number of photos for a 3.34 mega-pixel resolution camera is 12, and corresponding error values can be anticipated at approximately 7.5 parts per thousand. There are numerous practice- and research-related geotechnical applications of this technique including landslide monitoring and mapping, measurement of physical models (e.g. centrifuge, shaking table models), and rapid post-earthquake reconnaissance surveys of damage sites.
