In geophysical exploration, it is usually necessary to establish an enough precise control network of exploration on the ground. This paper researches on the precision of rapid static GPS positioning technique for short-baseline horizontal control network of exploration through a delicated experiment. A typical geodetic quadrilateral GPS network and a dedicated observation scheme were designed for a simulation research. All the baseline lengths of the network are shorter than 1 km . Ashtech Z-12 dual frequency geodetic GPS receivers were used for the survey. All the angles and distances of the control network were also independently measured using precise theodolite and electronic distance measurement so that a comprehensive comparison between GPS technique and traditional surveying techniques can be carried out. Precision analysis demonstrates that the GPS network solution can satisfy the precision requirement up to the "Order 2" horizontal control survey, as is defined in "Standards and Practices for Control Survey" issued by Inter-Governmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (Australia) in 2002. In addition, some other useful conclusions are presented in the paper. We believe that the conclusions drawn are valuable references for small-scale horizontal control network of geophysical exploration using GPS technique.
