Many permanent magnet synchronous motor drive systems can benregarded as two time scale systems. In this paper, a singularnperturbation technique is employed to decompose the system into twonlinear time invariant subsystems. These linear subsystems have beennexploited with a conventional linear observer technique to developnobservers for the rotor position and velocity using measurements ofncurrents. This paper demonstrates that it is possible to use an averagenvalue of the velocity in the rotor position observer. Under fairly mildnassumptions, bounds are derived for the error in positionnestimates
