Numerous national laboratories in the UnitedStates have roots related to the Manhattan Projectthat contributed to the end of World War II. Thepioneering science and engineering that took placeover the decades that followed continues to influencemodern-day actinide-related research at thoseinstitutions, leading to unique strengths and cuttingedgeideas and perspectives. These same nationallaboratories also face a challenge: figuring out how tocapture the expertise of a retiring workforce who hadfirst-hand experience in these pioneering nuclearefforts.
