Effective emergency WASH response using demand-driven methods: a case study from Afghanistan

In the post-emergency context, economic revitalization is a key factor for any response. Therefore,rndemand-driven interventions that promote sustainable livelihoods should be favoured. This case studyrnfrom Afghanistan illustrates effective emergency WASH response using demand-driven methods in a postrnconflict setting. Resources were invested in promotion and marketing of household-level water andrnsanitation interventions. At the same time, artisans were trained and livelihoods were developed to meetrnthe new demand for household water filters and latrines. This approach has created sustainablernlivelihoods for many artisans while also addressing health issues relating to water quality and sanitation.
