It was not too long ago that the production costs of white sugar were financed by sales of byproducts like molasses and dried pulp. Only the beets needed to be paid for by the revenues generated by white sugar. The energy crises in Europe changed this situation for the very first time. In the mid-1990s companies started to take into account the costs caused by the application of processing aids. This also gave rise to new fields of research and development as well as process optimization.
