Many factors have influenced development of the Monumental Core in Washington, DC. Soil and groundwater conditions have influenced the foundations, and in one case the location, of the monuments and memorials. Foundation construction techniques have progressed with advances in the state of the art. The history and development of the Mall have also played an important role.
