Intense mixing and enhanced heat and mass transfer in the SDR make it a very versatile reactor for performing a wide range of reactions, such as polymerization and crystallization. Higher rates of polymerization, reduced processing times and controlled molecular weight distributions (MWD) have been achieved in the SDR for benzoyl-peroxide-initiated styrene polymerization and UV-induced bulk polymerization of n-butyl acrylate. Uniformly shaped crystals of barium sulphate having a tightly controlled crystal size distribution were formed in the spinning disc crystallizer. The SDR has the added flexibility of additional degrees of freedom, such as disc speed and temperature, which can be manipulated by the operator to obtain end-products tailored to meet product requirements.
