Calcined gypsum has been investigated as a potential replacement for cement in the production of stabilised backfills for underground mines because it is cheaper to produce than cement. This paper discusses the effect of environmental conditions on the strength of gypsum-based fills. Laboratory tests used curing environments that simulated a variety of possible mining conditions. The results showed that gypsum-based fills can perform satisfactorily in the various environments considered.
