Chlorofluorocarbons and bromocarbons deplete the ozone layer and are being phased out under the Montreal Protocol.In many applications such as refrigeration and air conditioning,foams,medical aerosols,fire protection,solvents,etc.,these ozone-depleting substancesare being replaced mainly with hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and in very few cases perfluorocarbons(PFCs).These HFCs and PFCs,while non-ozone depleting,are greenhouse gasesand hence contribute to global warming.Options exist to substitute for these gases in certainapplications.The IPCC and TEAP have finalized a Special Report on “Safeguarding the ozonelayer and the global climate system: Issues related to hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons”(SROC) in 2005.This paper highlights the key findings of the report regarding emissions ofozone-depleting substances,HFCs,alternatives to HFCs,as well as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissionreduction options.
