A soda-cooked wheat straw pulp, representative of the type of non-wood pulp used in China today, was bleached in the laboratory with the aim of partially and/or totally replacing chlorine containing chemicals with hydrogen peroxide. The consequences of such changes were evaluated in terms of product quality and environmental performance. Whereas, when the hypochlorite is completely replaced by hydrogen peroxide, the final brightness was marginally lower than the reference sequence, the brightness reversion was significantly reduced. Some improvements in the pulp quality were also observed. When the chlorine was reduced, the environmental performance was dramatically improved in terms of reduction in the effluent AOX (Absorbable organic halogens) level.
