Recrystallisation in Strip-Cast Aluminium Foil Alloys

Aluminium foil is usually produced by rolling AlFeSi alloys with an intermediate annealing. The softening and change in microstructure during final annealing of different strip-cast AlFeSi foil alloys, rolled to different gauges, have been investigated. The characterisation was performed using tensile testing, thermoelectric- and resistivity measurements, transmission- and scanning electron microscopy also using orientation image microscopy. The iron and silicon contents of the alloy have a strong influence on the type, size and number of intermetallic particles and dispersoids. The tendency to discontinuous or continuous recrystallisation during final annealing is rather well predicted by a model that takes into account both the particle size distribution and the misorientation dependence of boundary energy and mobility.
