In this paper, the authors proposed a simple grinding method to prevent loading. In this method, grinding was performed using grinding fluid with free abrasive grains. The authors call this method "Loading-free grinding". It was applied to the grinding of austenitic stainless steel with a metal bonded cBN wheel. Alumina grains were used as free abrasive grains, and their diameter was half as large as that of cBN grains. They were mixed with grinding fluid by 2wtpercent. Using this fluid, we performed traverse grinding with a CNC surface grinder. The grinding force and finished surface roughness of loading-free grinding were compared with those of conventional grinding. By these experiments, loading-free grinding showed the effects as follows; since the adhered chips on cBN grains were removed effectively by free grains, loading was prevented. This means that the depth of cut or feed in loading can be greater than in conventional grinding. Further, the free abrasive grains had no effect on grinding force but the finished surface roughness of loading-free grinding was slightly larger than in conventional grinding.
