The microstructure and properties of ZTM ceramics fabricated from spray dried powders differing in granule morphology and deformability were determined. The effects of feed slurry solids content on the granule character was discussed. Lower solid content resulted in hard and tough 'donut' shaped granules that resisted deformation during compaction. The microphotograph showed that relative large intergranular pores, due to the incomplete deformation of granules, which persisted during sintering, were major strength limiting defects in fired material studied in this work. Sintered material pressed from uniform and deformable granules produced from high solid content slurry had a homogeneous microstructure and relative high mean strength.
