摘要

A series of acoustic emission (AE) testing on strands used for making 29mm diameter rope of 6 x 19S+FC construction was conducted under fatigue condition. The test results showed that amplitude distribution analysis of AE signals used by early researchers in the area was not suited for detecting the wire break mainly due to the high amplitude acoustic noise introduced by broken wire springing out of strand. However, it was possible to detect and discriminate the wire break from the other AE sources using energy, counts, amplitude and duration parameters of AE events all together. It was also found that rise time, counts to peak and average frequency parameters were not suited to detect wire break.
