Status of Antibiotic Resistant Aeromonads in the Water, Sediments and Fishes of Bangladesh Aquaculture

Stuies were conducted to investigate the status of Aeromonads content in water, sediments and fishes of freshwater aquaculture facilities in Bangladesh and to monitor the level of their resistance to various antibitics. Aeromonas spp were isolated from the sampled water, sediments (soil), fish body surface (slime) and kidney on a selective medium, Aeromonsas Ager Base(Oxoid) supplemented with ampicillin SR 136. The numbers of Aeromonas spp in the water and sediments sampled from ten fish ponds under seven aquaculture facilities in from ten fish ponds under seven aquachulture facilities in Bangladesh varied from 1.4x10~3 to 1.2x10~5 CFU/mL of water and 1.5x10~4 to 1.9x10~6 CFU/g of wet sediments. Oxytetracycline resistat (OT) isolates were determined on the same medium containing 20 mug/mL of oxyteracycline, which varied from 1.6x10~-2 to 5.0x10~5 CFU/mL of water and 1.6x10~3 to 1.8x10~6 CFU/g of wet sediments.
