1. The impact of AAAs upon the IMT2000 / UTRA network capacity was considered in both non-shadowed and log-normal shadow faded propagation environments. 2. Considerable network capacity gains were achieved, employing both two and four element AAAs. 3. This work was then extended by the application of AQAM techniques in conjunction with the previously studied AAAs in a log-normal shadow faded propagation environment, which elicited further significant network capacity gains. 4. Explicitly, the employment of AAAs facilitated the doubling of the network's capacity in some of the investigated scenarios. 5. Furthermore, invoking AQAM increased both the average throughput and the robustness of the network, since a sudden channel quality reduction did not result in dropping the call supported, it rather activated a lower-throughput modulation mode. 6. Our further research will quantify the design trade-offs associated with the joint employment of AQAM and space-time coding, as wellas their Impact on the network's capacity.
