In the last years, infrared (IR) cameras have been used increasingly in forest firernrelated applications. They provide information of unique spatial and temporal resolution, but thernstandard methods of thermography may give erroneous results due to the complex spectral structurernof the IR emission of fire. In this work, a two-band imaging system, operating in the mediumrnIR and thermal IR bands, has been used to study laboratory forest fires, demonstrating thatrnvaluable information can be obtained on fire temperatures and on the spatial distribution of therndifferent fire regions (flames, flaming and nonflaming embers, ashes and background). Long distancernmeasurements have been simulated by taking into account atmospheric transmittance andrnloss of spectral resolution. It is concluded that bi-spectral measurements at a distance of 1 kmrnshould still resolve flames from other fire regions.
