Interoperability―Hart of Battle Force Readiness

The DEP concept has demonstrated in a prototype and in two CV Battle Group Interoperability Tests an effective means of testing for combat system interoperability prior to at-sea testing. The power of the network to support real-time testing of very complex systems and to facilitate the collaborative engineering process has been proofed in concept. It appears that the DEP concept offers the possibility of combining decentralized problem solving with the power of the network to collaborate and integrate the engineering process. This bottom-up engineering approach extends information technology to the difficult environment of naval combat systems. The vast majority of the DEP work remains in the future in the form of higher fidelity, new capabilities, and joint operations.
