One of the key impediments to optimized material readiness in the Navy is the lack of common or integrated maintenance automated information systems. The Navy counted thirty or more such systems in 1997, few if any of which could communicate or share data. Little has changed to date, other than the numbers of such systems that affect the maintenance and logistics enterprise are now in excess of one hundred. This paper reviews the recent history of maintenance automated information systems and proposes a strategy and process for converging the myriad of systems into something that is manageable and effective in optimizing material readiness.
