The spectral sampling (i.e. width and position ofrnspectral bands) of multi-spectral sensors closelyrndepends on mission objectives. It is planned thatrnSentinel-2 carries an optical payload with visible, nearrninfrared and shortwave infrared sensors and providesrnenhanced continuity of SPOT- and Landsat-type data.rnThis paper evaluates the spectral sampling of Sentinel-rn2 by a newly developed method based on Shannon’srninformation theory. The method tries to select the mostrninformative spectral regions of the spectrum withrndefined accuracy. It has been applied on hyperspectralrnimages collected over three different types of landrncover including vegetation, water and bare soil. Thernmethod has given different bands combinations forrneach land cover showing informative spectral regions,rnwhich were then compared with Sentinel-2 bands. Thernresults document the information content of Sentinel-2rnthrough entropy assessment for each band andrnevaluation of its width and location by comparisonrnwith informative bands.
