This paper will discuss a revolutionary antioxidant synergist for use in the stabilization of polyols and flexible slabstock foams. The traditional stabilization strategies for polyols and flexible foam polyurethanes will be reviewed and contrasted with the new antioxidant technology. The underlying theme is that the slabstock foam industry appears poised to adopt lower volatility antioxidant systems. The technology discussed here represents the development of synergistic, lower volatility antioxidant systems to meet the marketplace demands for chemical replacements for BHT systems. Data to be presented includes thermal analysis testing of polyols and flexible foams, and color evaluations in polyurethane foams that were prepared on a laboratory bench scale and subjected to microwave oven scorch testing as an accelerated thermal aging medium.
