THE USE OF DREDGED MATERIALS IN ABANDONED MINE RECLAMATION

Three mega-volume features of American industrial output have been combined for their mutual beneficial use: Abandoned Mine Lands, coal fly ashes, and material dredged from navigation channels. Half-a-million tons of sediments dredged from New York Harbor are being amended with pozzolonic residues from coal-burning to form a soil cement for the reclamation of a strip mine feature in west-central Pennsylvania. The nature of the trace contaminants in dredged sediments is here described, along with the physical and chemical effects of amending them with pozzolonic wastes. The project operations, including materials transport, handling, and testing are described along with preliminary results from the demonstration site.
