The traffic in the central parts of Oslo city and Oslo harbour is planned to be lead through an immersed tunnel, crossing the bays Bjorvika and Bispevika. The tunnel will be a part of E18, the main east-west road axis in Oslo, and will contribute to improve several environmental aspects in this area: 1. An area of 100,000 m~2 of heavy contaminated marine sediments will be neutralised by constructing two confined disposal facilities close to the tunnel track. 2. 300,000 m~3 of clean marine clay excavated from the tunnel trench may be used as capping material on contaminated sea-bottom in the Inner Oslofjord. 3. Noise and traffic emissions will be significantly reduced. 4. A land area of 500-600,000 m~2 will be recovered for urban development.
