In ironing, the size of the product is, invariably, different from that of the die in the direction of thickness. The inner diameter of the product is smaller than the diameter of the punch, while the outer diameter of the product is larger than the inner diameter of the die-cavity. The reason to cause the size difference in thickness is springback of the workpiece. The springback of cups was analyzed and the errors disassembled into two components - that respectively in thickness and circumferential direction. By means of the simulation and forming experiment, a formula of defining compensation for springback was established. It forms a basis for the design of dies. The design resulted in the forming of the product with higher precision and longer tool life.
