The surface profile of the display area in a mobile phone handset was machined in hard steel (P20) using high-speed machining strategies. Unexpected machining flaws were detected on the finished part and an investigation of the flaws has resulted in a theory to explain their causes. This paper presents the theory and postulates that the surface irregularities occurred in the roughing and semi-finishing operations.
