The research described in this paper is concerned with the successful implementation of Product Data Management (PDM). In our research, management commitment emerged as one of the most important variables influencing success of the implementation. In this research we have also found the following: user acceptance, costs, and lack of awareness by management. These were found from a survey involving 70 companies in a number of sectors of business from SME's to multinational companies. The research is continuing with the aim of reviewing current practice in implementing product data management systems and on the basis of this research providing a management tool to assist in successful implementation.
