An ontology driven manufacturing system engineering moderator for global virtual enterprise teams

The exchange and sharing of knowledge within any multi-discipline, globally distributed team, is very complex. An intelligent support tool, called the MSE Moderator, supports this type of team working, in Manufacturing System Engineering (MSE) design. It is essential that a common understanding and terminology exist if the team is to produce a good, effective design. This can be difficult to achieve when the team operates in a single environment or operation, but it is far more complex when the team is part of a virtual or extended enterprise. In this paper, we proposes the MSE ontology to provide a common understanding of manufacturing-related terms for MSE Moderator and to enhance the interoperability and reuse of knowledge resources within global virtual manufacturing teams.
